LA trip
Friday morning was an early start after Thursday night’s gig. We were on the road to the airport around 7am to make our 9 o’clock flight to LA to meet up with Lawyer Lee. Rich met Lee through the Renegades, and we became clients of Broken Ocean a little over a year ago when Lee put together a very snappy business and marketing plan for Maximum Indifference. A couple weeks back Lee came to us with an opportunity to do a soundtrack for an independent film project he was involved in with some filmmakers from Japan.
We scrambled around a bit to put together a brand-new press kit and sent that off with a few samples of some of our music. Lee seemed to think if any deal were to go forward, a face-to-face meeting was going to have to happen… so there we were, three happy little MI-ers on a plane bound for LA. Lawyer Lee picked us up for an early lunch in West LA to talk the state of things Indifference and to get things lined up for our meeting with the filmmakers. Not very far away, in a modest, non-descript office building in West LA, we met with Ko and Junichi from Eleven Arts, the producer and director on the project. For about an hour we talked, listened, and shared some thoughts on how this thing might actually work…

Though no official deal is yet inked, we parted, scripts in hand, feeling extremely positive, especially Lawyer Lee – who himself was surprised to learn that the very project he’s been executive producing, will in fact be going to the Cannes Film Festival. Hopefully, we’ll have an official announcement very soon.

We spent the rest of the afternoon hanging out in Santa Monica, taking advantage of the extremely gorgeous LA weather. We were a little confused by the “Patio area is for dining only…” city ordinance, but eventually got over it and moved on down to check out the pier and what not.

Highlight #1: Good Samaritan Rich helping a guy in a wheelchair up the overpass on the Santa Monica pier – and nearly dumping him in the street in the process. Highlight #2: “No!” being the simultaneous cut off from Lee, Rich, and myself in response to one of Mark’s attempted meeting anecdotes.
